“Spaces of Familiarity, Spaces of Difference in the Mediterranean”
At the intersection of Africa, Asia, and Europe, the Mediterranean Sea basin is a cradle of civilizations and a crucible for world affairs. Diverse peoples, cultures, and religions come together in this shared arena of contact, exchange, and friction. It also functions as a nexus for practices of imperialism, nationalism, authoritarianism, and resistance. In peace and in conflict, events in the Mediterranean affect the world in critical ways. This conference examines how peoples in the basin interact in the present and past. Leading international scholars will share the latest research on subjects ranging from the contemporary Middle East to ancient Greek archaeology.
The conference takes place in Taiwan, an island at the confluence of East Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific maritime worlds. A crossroads of different peoples and a focus point of global dynamics, Taiwan’s context raises new comparative perspectives for research on the Mediterranean. It also opens opportunities for connecting the Asia-Pacific to the Mediterranean.
The Asian Federation of Mediterranean Studies Institutes IV Biennial International Conference will gather more than 50 interdisciplinary scholars from five continents. Investigators based in East and Southeast Asia and researchers from the Middle East-North Africa, Europe, Australia, and North America tackle international relations, legal studies, sociology, literary studies, history, Islamic studies, musicology and other subjects related to the Mediterranean in the social sciences and humanities.
